Turkey Season is Underway

On April 1st, Brent Clark headed out in pursuit of some Longbeards.

"Well today is the opening day of Archery Turkey season here in KS. I wasnt going to miss it for anything and sure glad I didnt! I took my girlfriend Ashlee, who has never been turkey hunting before. We had a blast, herd a bunch of gobbles but only saw one turkey which was a nice tom that I called in. He came to within about 18yds and I arrowed him perfect. He walked off about 10yds and fell over!! He has a 9 3/4" beard, 1" & 7/8" spurs and weighed 22lbs!"

Christmas Day Shed

The antlers are just starting to fall. Casi finds a fresh 9pt shed off of a familiar buck named "Duece", because of his multiple droptines. During the same day she filmed Duece, who had already dropped both sides at only 40 yards.

Winter Has Arrived!

During the last days of November, Dan heads up to Saskachewan in hopes of harvesting a Giant buck in the frigid cold. On the 4th day of the hunt, Dan is able to make a great shot on this awesome 10 pt buck! Congrats Dan on another great buck!

In the last days of the Kansas Rifle season, Casi decides to take a management doe, and fill the freezer. Nice Job!

A BIG Start to Rut Junkie Deer Season

On October the 9th, Rut Junkie Team Members Dan and Jill Schafer decided to fight the rainy conditions and head out to the remote wilderness of Ontario. Jill would be in front of the camera with her .270 WSM and Dan would be behind the camera capturing the entire hunt on film.

They decided to sit on a large open marsh that the deer have been visiting. 30 minutes after they sat down, Jill spotted a BIG buck about 225 yards away on the far side of the marsh. They watched him for about 20 minutes, hoping he would eventually work towards them for a closer shot. Eventually the buck started to head back into the woods, when Jill pulled the trigger and made a perfect shot. The buck dropped in his tracks!

The mature buck has 11 points and easily weighs 300lbs on the hoof. Congrats Dan and Jill on an awesome buck and starting the 2007 Deer Season off in a Big Way!

Early Muzzleloader Season Updates

As of late, the RJ gang has been busy in Kansas with the early muzzleloader season. Joey & Casi have been seeing bucks, but at this point a buck worthy of Casi's tag hasn't cooperated enough to take a ride home in the back of their truck. A similar story has played out with Jody & Alicia - with her first early muzzleloader season ever, Alicia has passed up various small bucks. Being plagued by the wrong wind directions for her best areas, Alicia hasn't been able to drop a big buck up to this point. Should she fail to harvest early, the rifle will come out on November 28th for the firearms season. The archery opener begins October 1st - Joey and Jody will get their turn in front of the camera, while their lovely wives capture all of the excitement on tape!! Rut Junkie will keep you updated!!!

During the first week of September Casi and Joey traveled to South Dakota on a DIY Archery Antelope hunt. While Casi was behind the camera, Joey was able to arrow a nice antelope buck at 35 yards. A great way to start off the 2007 Rut Junkie Season...

Summertime News....

Hey guys, we're smack-dab in the middle of the summer, and boy has it been busy!!! Sorry for the lack of posts in here as of late - the Rut Junkie gang is busy trying to get more things put together for our first DVD. We've been filming, doing summertime scouting, and getting things arranged with sponsorship. We're working hard to include some things never before seen in a whitetail DVD. One of the hardest things for us to decide on was a name for the DVD - after months of brainstorming, we've come up with a title that is original and definitely fits!! We're keeping the title under wraps for now, but in time we'll spill the beans. We promise!!!

Well, it's that time of year again. The antlers are dropping, and we're finding a few of them!! Of the 40 or so sheds the Junkies have picked up thus far, we've found some real nice ones and have made some awesome memories afield. Check out round one of some "as they lay" photos!!

Sheds, Deads, and BIG Rubs...

The Junkies were able to do some Shed Hunting over the weekend and find several sheds. The biggest shed was actually first spotting by our good friend Val, when we were taking down some stands for the year. Hopefully we'll be able to cross paths with that brute this fall! And unfortunately, here is one of the 2 bucks we found dead...We sure hate to see that.

If you like BIG rubs, then I'm sure you'll like the tree Jody and Joey are kneeling by!

Iowa Whitetail Classic 2007...

Just a day prior to the Iowa Whitetail Classic, a blizzard swept throughout Iowa and the midwest. Luckily, by Saturday morning, the roads were mostly clear (from the south) and we were able to make the trip to the show.

As usual, the Iowa Whitetail Classic did not have any shortage of Big Bucks! As you can see in the pictures, bucks were lined up stretching across the width of the exhibition room. If you get excited over big bucks as we do, then you should like these pics!

We were also able to meet a few people from the Rut Junkie forum. It was good to put faces with names. Hopefully we can see you again soon!

Found ten minutes into today's shed hunt, this dead buck was laying in a patch of trees next to an overgrown pasture. It looks as if the buck died within the last week as the flesh was still quite moist. He's a 4x2, with the smaller side having a brow tine and about a 20" beam coming close to straight up off his head. Weird buck, I would have rather found his sheds.

Jody went out for a quick walk this afternoon, and found this shed in the corner of a pasture where two fencerows met. It's from last year, but it still goes 59" and has a nifty little acorn on the G3!

On February 18th, 2007, Rut Junkie Media was introduced to the public. We are so excited!! Being able to share our adventures with all of you while building the type of hunting DVD you've been asking for truly means a lot to us. I managed to find shed #1 on January 28th. This shed goes an even 60" with the brow tine chewed off. The antler is from last year...but it's a good way to start the 2007 shed season!!

Post Season Scouting

Season is over, but I’m still hitting the woods as much as I can. Right now is the best time to get out and check the deer scrapes, rubs, and trails. Since you don’t have to worry about spooking deer, get out there and plan for next fall… it’s only 8-9 months away!

Casi and I decided to do some predator hunting on Sunday morning in attempt to control the predator population. This year we’ve seen more coyotes and bobcats than usual. So I planned where we would sit, and we drove to our favorite deer hunting spot. When we got to the creek, (Which seems to be flooded only when we’re hunting), once again it was flooded from the large amount snowfall. So we decided to just sit in the timber, next to the creek, call and see what happens.

It was only my 2nd series of calls, and here comes 2 coyotes across the wide open field. Unfortunately we weren’t on the end of the field like I wanted, but they were headed our way. Once they got to the edge of the timber, they disappeared for a couple minutes. The wind was right, so I wasn’t worried. And finally they appeared again, not 80 yards away. I fixed my Browning .308, behind the first coyotes shoulder and squeezed the trigger. But I missed! I choked! I don’t know how I missed him, but the last I saw him, he was running full bore the other direction. It was his lucky day. I guess I better stick to bow hunting!

After the coyote incident, we took down a couple treestands for the year, and checked our game cameras. From the tracks we found scouting, it seemed the deer weren’t hitting the fields as much as I expected, but instead, staying in the heavy timber and brush, and out of the wind. My Game Cameras exposed 7-8 bucks, in which one young buck had shed a side. So even though they’re starting, I still need to wait a little longer before the shed hunting begins.

Here’s a young buck (Below) chasing a doe, in circles. The picture was taken in early January. Sure is late in the year to still be seeing that!

Here’s a descent 10 pt. buck (Below) which has some great potential, and just needs another year.
